Kol Zimrah Sings!
Kol Zimrah, Chicago’s premier Jewish community choir, is proud to announce its first in-person benefit concert since 2019: Kol Zimrah Sings! The performance will take place at Makom Solel Lakeside congregation in Highland Park on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 3:00 pm. It will also be available to view remotely for those who are out of town or are unable to attend in person. This event serves as Kol Zimrah’s primary fundraiser. Kol Zimrah Sings! will celebrate the choir by honoring its past while looking ahead to its continued growth and evolution. Repertoire will include a selection of the ensemble’s most popular recently performed works as well as pieces that are new to the choir. Rather than relying on external soloists, Kol Zimrah will highlight its own exceptional members in large-scale and more solo-focused works.
Kol Zimrah is a welcoming community choir with over 50 singers from across the Chicago metropolitan area representing nearly 20 congregations in addition to unaffiliated members. Even during the pandemic, the group maintained a consistent virtual rehearsal and performance schedule with the support of its dedicated leaders, Music Director Cantor Pavel Roytman and Assistant Conductor and pianist Margo Schwartz-Newton. “Our mission is to bring joy, healing, and connection through Jewish music”, shared Roytman. “We are thrilled to share our music and community with others.”
The ensemble has been an integral part of Chicago’s Jewish cultural scene for decades and regularly performs throughout Chicagoland as well as internationally. Recent highlights include appearances at Symphony Center, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Millennium Park, Paris, and in Berlin at the Louis Lewandowski Festival.
While Kol Zimrah’s core mission is to perform, sustain, and promote the great tradition of Jewish choral music, it also forges and deepens community spirit. The group’s repertoire spans several centuries and embraces all cultural backgrounds, performing music ranging from 16th-century Italian Jewish masterworks to world-premiere commissions to African American spirituals.
Kol Zimrah is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported by contributions and benefactors. For more information, contact concertinfo@kolzimrah.org.
